Sometimes, I get so busy "doing" for my family that I feel like the things I do should be looked at as "favors" from me to them. Things like cleaning, cooking, ironing, folding, cleaning, cleaning, laundry, picking up toys, and more cooking.
Then I wake up sometimes and realize that all of those things, as important as they are, really don't show my family how I really feel about them. Yes, I get up and get them ready in the mornings, making breakfast, praying with Jason before he walks out the door, watching him until I see that 2nd foot lift off of the ground onto the big yellow bus that he loves to ride so much. And yes, I pack his backpack the night before, lay out his clothing, charge his gameboy so he can play it on the bus, etc.
But does he really SEE how much I love him from this stuff? Probably not. I'm sure he "knows" it.
And for Sarah, she's with me all day every day and I realize that sometimes, being a mommy gets into the way of being HER mommy. Somedays, she says "let's play" or "can we go to the park" and I have a list a mile and a half long and so I say "not today, sweetie".
Today, as I have done many many times before, I decided that I need to really take the time to SHOW them that they are special to me in other ways besides my chores that are necessary to keep a smoothly run household. To them, those things probably aren't as important as they are to me. So, today, I skipped the housework that I ALWAYS do on Mondays and I took Sarah to the park at the zoo where we fed the ducks and played at the park. Then, when she laid down for her nap, I baked Jason's FAVORITE cookies and made homemade lemonade which is their favorite thing to drink that they don't get very often.
I wrote them both a note telling them how much I love them...which really would have been "enough" and wouldn't have taken as much time but I chose to do more than "enough" today. I chose to do "more".
When Jason asks me what the special occassion is, I'll just say "I know you KNOW it, but I had to SHOW it!" And I know he'll realize how much him and his little sister mean to me.
So, take the time today or every day to do something little for your kids. Write them a note and put it under their pillow that they can find at bedtime, or color a picture with them, play barbies or simply read a book. Just make sure that you don't look at whatever you're doing as a "chore" but as a privelege of being theirs and them being yours and those "little" things will go farther than you'll ever imagine!
